Compare and Contrast Essay-Final

Almost everyone in the world at least has a dictionary or an electronic dictionary. They both tell us meaning of words we don’t know. However, there are more differences than similarities in these two dictionaries. This essay’s purpose is to compare and contrast the appearance and features of these two dictionaries.

A dictionary is like a book. Some are really small, for portable ones, others are huge and thick. It has many brands like Oxford or Cambridge. It has a simple design on the cover, and in the inside is simple too. Its purpose is to tell us meanings of words we don’t know. Dictionaries have many types like thesaurus one, and the idiom ones.

On the other hand, electronic dictionaries are much more developed, in the sense of appearance and the features. In Korea, almost all students use this for schools, and also in tuitions or for travelling. Therefore, many companies produce electronic dictionaries suitable for students. iRiver and Nurian’s electronic dictionaries are very popular in Korea; they have great features and different types of dictionaries in one. The dictionary looks like a mini-laptop, having small keyboards and many colors. Designs are very unique, so that it may look attractive for people to see. Most of them are small, because students need to carry it around in their bags. Many features are included, like music and video player, touchpad function, games, picture viewer, an eBook, calculator, memo, calendar and many more. Languages are the main thing, because it is a dictionary, not a laptop. It also has many special types like thesaurus and ones for idioms.

However, this is not the problem. Even though the two dictionaries have many differences in their appearances and features; their main purpose is the same. The purpose that is to tell us meaning of words we don’t understand.
